August at The Firs: Music, Memories and Moments
August has been another busy and joyful month at The Firs, filled with laughter, friendship, creativity, music and plenty of opportunities for our residents to enjoy time together.
From sunny days in the garden to exciting outings, creative activities and visits from our wonderful friends in the community, there has been lots to smile about. Here’s a look at some of the highlights from August.
Music to Make Us Smile
Music played a very special part in August. Our weekly Thursday tunes with Graham once again brought smiles to everyone with singing and happy memories made together. We’re so grateful to Graham for volunteering his time and filling our home with music each week.
We were also delighted to welcome back our monthly singer, Colin, for another fantastic afternoon of entertainment. It was wonderful to see residents clapping, singing along and enjoying some favourite tunes together.

Fun, Games and Keeping Active
Our residents enjoyed their weekly bingo sessions, with plenty of excitement and friendly competition. We also had a go at The Price Is Right, guessing the prices of everyday household items and comparing them with what things used to cost. Congratulations to our winner, Sandra!
Our exercise sessions were just as much fun. With Derby County Community Trust, residents took part in gentle chair-based exercises designed to support strength, flexibility and confidence. We also enjoyed balloon tennis, beanbag toss and a point-scoring football game. There were lots of laughs along the way!

We also celebrated International Left-Handers Day with a left-handed basketball challenge. It was certainly harder than it looked, but everyone had great fun giving it a go!
Creativity and Cosy Moments
August gave us plenty of opportunities to get creative. Residents enjoyed colouring, painting, magic water pictures, decorating photo frames and working together on a jigsaw in our Jigsaw Club.
Our Knit and Natter session was another lovely afternoon. Knitting brought back lots of happy memories, while the relaxed atmosphere gave everyone the chance to chat, laugh and enjoy one another’s company.
Wonderful Visits and Community Connections
We were delighted to welcome Breaston Wrap Around Care back to The Firs. The children spent time reading stories with our residents and conversing with them. They even brought along some delicious treats they had made for us!
Our monthly church service gave residents the opportunity for reflection and companionship.
A huge thank you to everyone who visited The Firs this month and helped make our days so special.
Making Wishes Come True
One of the highlights of August was seeing our residents’ Wish Tree wishes come true.
Lorraine and Brenda wished to spend time seeing and feeding animals, so we enjoyed a lovely trip to Lanes Garden Centre. We met the farm animals, fed them and made some wonderful memories before relaxing in the café with drinks and tasty treats.
We also helped Phyllis enjoy her special wish with a stroll around Breaston, followed by tea and cake at a local café.

These outings are such a wonderful reminder of how meaningful it can be to turn a simple wish into a special memory.
A Furry New Friend
To celebrate International Cat Day, our residents met our new furry pet therapy companion. Everyone enjoyed plenty of strokes and cuddles before taking part in a vote to choose her name.
Thanks to our lovely resident Kathleen’s suggestion, we’re delighted to introduce Phoebe!
We continued the cat-themed fun with colouring and wordsearches, making it a truly purr-fect day.
Sunshine, Gardens and Our First Harvest
Our Gardening Club celebrated a very exciting milestone in August: our first potato harvest! After planting, watering and patiently waiting, we finally dug up our potatoes. They may have been small, but we were incredibly proud of our first crop and can’t wait to see what we can grow next!

Pampering, Celebrations and Special Moments
Our wonderful hairdresser, Barbara, did her weekly Wednesday visits, giving residents the chance to enjoy a little pampering.
We also celebrated the birthday of our lovely resident Jean, enjoying sweet treats and a special day surrounded by friends and family.

We loved seeing Brenda carefully brushing the hair of our resident baby doll. Doll therapy can provide comfort, encourage nurturing behaviours and create meaningful engagement; not to mention the pride and happiness Brenda took in caring for her doll.

A Voice for Our Residents
Our monthly Residents’ Meeting in August gave everyone the opportunity to share ideas, suggestions and feedback.
One resident suggested creating a more detailed weekly activity planner, and we were delighted to put the idea into action! Our new planner will be displayed around the home alongside an activity whiteboard, and shared on our Facebook page so relatives and friends can see what we have planned.
We also discussed improvements around the home, food menus and ideas for future activities and events.
At The Firs, our residents’ voices matter, and we’re incredibly grateful for all the wonderful suggestions that help continue making our home an even happier place to live.
Looking Back on August
August has been about togetherness and creating opportunities for our residents to enjoy themselves, make memories, try something new and spend quality time with the people around them.
As we look ahead to September, we can’t wait to see what adventures, activities and special moments the new month will bring.
From everyone at The Firs, thank you to our residents, families, volunteers, visitors and community partners for helping make August such a wonderful month.
Here’s to another month of friendship, fun and happy memories!
