Bringing Joy in July
July has been a truly wonderful month here at The Firs Residential Home, filled with laughter, friendship, creativity and unforgettable moments. From exciting outings and meaningful reminiscence sessions to our much-anticipated Summer Fayre, every day has brought something special for our residents to enjoy. Here’s a look back at everything we’ve been up to this month.
A Month of Music
Music has been a constant source of joy throughout July. We were delighted to welcome Graham back for another fantastic afternoon of singing, clapping and dancing along to well-loved classics. Music has such a wonderful way of bringing people together, lifting spirits and creating lasting memories.
Later in the month, we enjoyed another brilliant performance from Colin, who once again filled our home with music, smiles and plenty of singing along. Our heartfelt thanks also go to our wonderful singer Biddy, whose fantastic performance at our Summer Fayre helped make the day even more special for residents, relatives and visitors alike.
Shopping, Sunshine and Summer Preparations
Our residents enjoyed a lovely afternoon of retail therapy when our popular pop-up shop visited. Browsing the rails, choosing new outfits and treating themselves to something special brought plenty of smiles.

As the sunshine continued, we made the most of the beautiful weather by getting creative outdoors. Residents worked together to paint a colourful tiki head, one of the decorations for our Hawaiian beach-themed Summer Fayre. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with teamwork, laughter and excitement as we prepared for one of the biggest events of the month.
Looking Back Through Time
One of the month’s most meaningful activities came when we received a loaned reminiscence box from The Royal Mint Museum. Residents loved exploring the fascinating collection of historical coins and artefacts, sparking conversations, treasured memories and stories from years gone by. These reminiscence sessions continue to be a valuable way of encouraging conversation, stimulating memories and bringing everyone together.

Sweet Celebrations
World Chocolate Day gave us the perfect excuse for a little fun! Residents enjoyed a lively game of Guess the Chocolate Bar, testing their knowledge while reminiscing about favourite treats from years gone by. It was a sweet afternoon full of laughter and happy memories.

Summer Fayre Success
Our Hawaiian-themed Summer Fayre was undoubtedly one of the highlights of July. It was fantastic to welcome so many residents, families, friends and members of the local community to join us for an afternoon filled with fun, music and smiles.

Live entertainment from Biddy kept everyone singing along, while the ice cream van helped us all stay cool. The event was a huge success, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who attended, volunteered and supported us throughout the day.
Following the event, our residents enjoyed making handmade thank you cards and hand delivering them to the many local businesses that generously donated prizes to our raffle. Once again, we’d like to heartfully thank them all.
Their kindness and generosity helped raise valuable funds for our Residents’ Comfort Fund, allowing us to continue creating meaningful experiences for everyone who calls The Firs home.
Keeping Active and Having Fun
In July, residents enjoyed a fantastic chair-based exercise session with the Derby County Community Trust, keeping active while having plenty of fun together.
Football fever also arrived at The Firs as residents coloured football-themed pictures, decorated the home with England decorations and got into the spirit of the World Cup. They even formed their own football team for an afternoon of laughter, friendly competition and impressive skills, proving you’re never too old to enjoy the beautiful game!

Residents also put their aiming skills to the test with our cactus hoop toss game before enjoying another round of our hugely popular Flamingo Toss game, which returned after being such a hit at our Summer Fayre. Both games brought laughter, cheer and a healthy dose of friendly competition.
Creative Moments
Creativity has flourished throughout July. One morning, residents spent time making beautiful colourful butterflies, which brighten our notice board and bring smiles to everyone who passes by. It’s amazing how a little creativity can make such a big difference to our home.
Meaningful Everyday Moments
Sometimes it’s the simplest moments that are the most meaningful.
We captured a lovely afternoon where two of our wonderful ladies kindly helped Tracey from our domestic team fold towels, while others enjoyed folding tiny baby clothes for our resident baby doll. Activities like these encourage conversation, provide a sense of purpose and bring back treasured memories.
Our lovely ladies also enjoyed some well-deserved pampering with relaxing nail care sessions. Choosing favourite colours, chatting together and leaving with beautifully painted nails gave everyone a wonderful confidence boost.
Wishes Do Come True

Another Wish Tree dream became reality this month when we helped fulfil Brenda’s simple but heartfelt wish to enjoy a cup of tea and a good chat. We headed out together for a relaxing afternoon complete with a delicious slice of Bakewell tart, creating another special memory to treasure.

Comfort, Friendship and Reflection
We were delighted to welcome Pause with Paws back to The Firs. Their wonderful dogs brought so much comfort, happiness and excitement to our residents, creating an afternoon full of smiles and affection that everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Residents also came together for another peaceful church service at The Firs. Filled with familiar hymns, prayers and quiet reflection, it was a comforting opportunity to spend time together before enjoying conversation afterwards.
Looking Back on a Wonderful Month
As July comes to a close, we’re incredibly proud and grateful of everything we’ve shared together. Whether creating beautiful crafts, enjoying music, staying active, making new memories or simply spending time together, every activity has helped enrich the lives of our residents.
A huge thank you to our dedicated team, wonderful volunteers, entertainers, local businesses, families and everyone in our community who has supported us throughout the month. Your kindness helps make The Firs such a happy, welcoming place to call home.
