May at The Firs: A Month of Moments

May has been a truly vibrant and heartwarming month here at The Firs, filled with laughter, community spirit, creativity, celebration, and meaningful connections. From special outings and intergenerational visits to themed activities and important awareness events, our residents and staff have enjoyed a variety of enriching experiences together.

At its heart, this month has been about one thing: creating joyful moments and meaningful memories every single day.

Fun, Friendship & Flowers at The Firs

We began the month with plenty of fun and laughter during our lively bean bag toss games. Residents and staff came together for some friendly competition, and the atmosphere was full of smiles, encouragement, and teamwork. These simple but engaging activities continue to bring so much joy and connection to daily life. We were also deeply touched by a kind donation of a beautiful flower display from a generous supporter. The arrangement has brightened our home wonderfully, bringing colour, freshness, and happiness to both residents and staff. Small gestures like this make a big difference, helping to create a warm and uplifting environment for everyone.

A Special Visit to Breaston Repair Café

One of our highlights this month was a wonderful first visit to Breaston Repair Café. Our residents thoroughly enjoyed taking part in their jigsaw exchange, swapping puzzles and discovering new challenges to enjoy back at home.

A particularly special moment was when one of our residents had her cardigan carefully repaired by a skilled volunteer. It was done with such kindness and care, and it meant so much to her.

We also enjoyed tea and cake together, as well as the generous donation of beautiful flowers for our garden, which we later planted together in the sunshine. The Repair Café’s commitment to sustainability, creativity, and community support left a lasting impression on everyone.

Creativity in Full Bloom

Creativity has been flowing freely this month at The Firs. Residents took part in a joyful afternoon of painting plant pots, each one uniquely decorated with bright colours and personal designs.

These pots will soon be filled with flowers, helping to bring even more colour and life to our garden spaces. Activities like these are not just fun, they encourage expression, teamwork, and a real sense of achievement. We also spent time updating our bee sanctuary and preparing forget-me-not decorations for our upcoming charity bake sale, blending creativity with purpose and community support.

Policy of the Month: Nutrition & Hydration

This month’s focus has been nutrition and hydration: perfect given the weather we’ve been experiencing!

Our team covered best practices, sharing knowledge, and strengthening awareness around individual dietary needs, preferences, and fluid intake. We continue to emphasise how important it is to recognise even small changes, as these can have a big impact on wellbeing.

At The Firs, we believe mealtimes should always be enjoyable, dignified, and tailored to each person because good nutrition is about more than food; it’s about care, comfort, and quality of life.

Celebrations, Birthdays & Special Days

May has also been full of celebration! We enjoyed a vibrant Cinco de Mayo themed day, complete with delicious Mexican-inspired food, colourful activities, and lots of laughter.

We also celebrated several special birthdays, including Gillian, Christena, and Brenda! Each celebration was filled with love, family visits, thoughtful gifts, cakes, and joyful moments shared with friends and staff. These occasions are so important in bringing everyone together and making residents feel truly valued.

Another particularly touching moment was helping fulfil a resident’s wish for a simple shopping trip. The afternoon ended with coffee and a treat at Birds Bakery, followed by a relaxed return home filled with smiles and contentment. These small wishes often create the most meaningful memories.

Music, Entertainment, & VE Day Celebrations

We were delighted to welcome live entertainment from singer Biddy Ronelle for our VE Day celebrations. Residents enjoyed singing along to wartime classics, dancing, and sharing memories.

This was followed by a beautiful afternoon tea party filled with music, laughter, and togetherness. VE Day is always a meaningful occasion, and this year was no exception.

We also continue to enjoy weekly music sessions with our wonderful volunteer Graham, whose visits bring joy, rhythm, and plenty of singing each week.

Dementia Action Week & Community Support

A particularly important focus this month has been Dementia Action Week.

We have been highlighting the importance of person-centred dementia care, where each individual is supported with dignity, patience, and understanding. Our ‘All About Me’ posters have been updated to help staff and visitors better understand each resident’s life story, preferences, and personality.

We also held a successful bake sale in support of Dementia UK, with fantastic support from families, staff, and the local community. It was wonderful to see everyone come together for such an important cause.

Intergenerational & Community Connections

We were delighted to welcome Breaston Preschool for a joyful intergenerational visit. Residents and children spent time playing games, sharing laughter, and building special memories together. These visits are always incredibly uplifting and meaningful for everyone involved.

We also enjoyed a monthly church service with St Michael’s Church, offering reflection, hymns, and fellowship, bringing comfort and peace to many of our residents.

Nature Watch: Our Caterpillar Journey

We ended the month with a magical moment: the release of our butterflies after watching them transform from caterpillars! Some even landed gently on our residents’ hands before flying off into the world, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
