February at The Firs: Love, Laughter and Little Moments of Joy
February may be the shortest month of the year, but here at The Firs Care Home in Derby, it has been wonderfully full. From cosy afternoons and creative celebrations to energetic games and heartwarming visits, the month has been a beautiful reminder that it’s often the simple moments that mean the most.
As winter begins to soften and hints of spring appear in the garden, February has given us time to reflect, connect and, most importantly, enjoy being together.
A Cosy Afternoon with The Greatest Showman
There’s nothing quite like settling in for a feel-good film on a chilly afternoon. This month, we gathered together to watch The Greatest Showman, a firm favourite filled with uplifting music. With delicious chocolate treats to enjoy and plenty of singing along to the soundtrack, it was the perfect way to relax.

Moments like these are about more than just a film; they’re about companionship, shared laughter, and the comfort of enjoying something side by side.
The smiles said it all, sometimes the cosiest afternoons create the warmest memories.
The Firs Winter Olympics Wrap-Up
Our residents got into the Winter Olympic spirits, participating in our very own Firs Olympics! The competitive streaks came out in full force as residents took part in snowball throwing challenges and aimed carefully for our Olympic hoops.

There was cheering, determination and plenty of laughter as everyone gave it their best shot. In the afternoon, we made the most of the lovely weather by heading into the garden, where conversations quickly turned to exciting spring gardening plans.
It was a wonderful way to celebrate teamwork, fresh air, and the changing seasons (proving that a little friendly competition can bring everyone together!).
Weekly Boccia & Exercise with Derby County Community Trust
At The Firs care home in Breaston, we absolutely love our weekly sessions with Derby County Community Trust. Whether it’s boccia, group exercise or movement-based games, these sessions are always full of focus, determination and, of course, fun!
Our ladies in particular showed quite the competitive spirit during boccia, carefully lining up their shots and celebrating every well-earned point.
Staying active is such an important part of wellbeing, and these sessions build confidence, strength, and connection.
A Sweet Visit from Breaston Wrap Around Care
Intergenerational moments are always incredibly special, and this month we were delighted to welcome the children from Breaston Wrap Around Care.
They spent time reading wonderful stories with our residents and brought along delicious homemade chocolate strawberries, a treat that was very much appreciated!
There is something truly heartwarming about seeing different generations sharing smiles and conversation. The joy in the room was undeniable, and we are so thankful for visits that brighten our day in such a meaningful way.
Celebrating Culture at The Firs with Chinese New Year
February also brought colourful celebrations as we prepared for Chinese New Year. Residents enjoyed colouring themed decorations in vibrant reds and golds, bringing brightness and energy into our home.

We also had a fantastic time baking Chinese New Year–inspired biscuits and cracking open fortune cookies to welcome the Year of the Horse. There were plenty of laughs as fortunes were read aloud, some inspiring, some mysterious, but all taken with good humour!
Sweet treats, creativity, and shared celebration made it a truly joyful occasion.
Pancake Day Fun – Flipping Fantastic!
Pancake Day is always a highlight at The Firs in Breaston, and 2026 was no exception!

We spent the afternoon practising our pancake flipping skills with steady hands, lots of concentration, and more than a few giggles along the way. Who knew flipping pancakes could be such a workout?
Later, we enjoyed our delicious creations topped with everything from classic lemon and sugar to chocolate sauce, syrup, and fresh fruit.
A Valentine’s to Remember at The Firs
February wouldn’t be complete without celebrating Valentine’s Day, and what a celebration it was. Our talented kitchen team prepared a beautiful three-course meal, starting with homemade tomato and red pepper soup, followed by scampi and chips, and finishing with delicious love heart brownies.
The dining room was filled with happy chatter and smiling faces as everyone enjoyed the special treat.

Residents got creative with Valentine’s crafts, making colourful wool-wrapped heart decorations, each one unique and full of personality.
We surprised residents with small bags of sweets and personalised messages highlighting what makes each of them so special. From kindness and humour to resilience and warmth, there is so much to celebrate about the wonderful people who call The Firs home.
We rounded off the festivities with a lively game of Valentine’s Bingo, which was completed with some friendly competition and a few lucky winners!
Paws, Songs & Special Visits at The Firs
Animal visits always put smiles on faces at The Firs, and Winnie’s visit this month was no exception. Gentle cuddles and wagging tails created calm, comforting moments for everyone involved.

Later, our wonderful volunteer Graham joined us for a musical afternoon filled with classic love songs. There was singing, toe tapping and plenty of fond memories shared.
Wishes Granted & Voices Heard
This month saw a very special milestone: the first Wish Tree wish granted. Our resident’s simple but lovely wish was a trip out to a café. Once there, she chose a comforting cup of tea and pancakes with Nutella and thoroughly enjoyed every bite.
Back at home, we held a residents’ meeting to review dinner options, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to share their thoughts and suggest new meals. Listening, involving and empowering our residents is always at the heart of what we do.
Looking Ahead to Spring at The Firs
As February draws to a close, we’re already looking forward to brighter days, new beginnings, and peaceful time spent in our gardens.
This month has been filled with love, laughter, teamwork, and togetherness, which are what make The Firs such a special place to live and work.
Here’s to welcoming spring with open arms and continuing to create meaningful moments every single day.
