Dementia Friendly Design in Care Homes: Creating a Therapeutic Environment at The Firs

Dementia affects more than just memory, it can alter perception, mood, and the ability to navigate familiar spaces.

Creating dementia-friendly environments involves designing spaces that are intuitive, calming, and personalised. This approach reduces anxiety, enhances orientation, and promotes a sense of familiarity and comfort for our residents.

A leading UK health think tank, The King’s Fund conducted extensive research on the impact of the physical environment on people with dementia. Their evaluation of the Enhancing the Healing Environment programme, which worked with NHS trusts in England, found that simple, cost-effective changes to the physical environment of care settings has positive effects on people with dementia, including reducing agitation and distress.

The blend of history and design at The Firs is not just about preserving aesthetics but creating an environment that feels like home. As a Victorian property built in 1908 with original features, such as intricate woodwork and grand fireplaces, our environment is a unique one that is both comforting and reminiscent of a bygone era.

Let’s explore this in more detail and what we’ve done at The Firs to support our residents who suffer with Dementia.

At The Firs, each resident’s room is personalised to reflect their individual preferences and life history. This approach not only makes the space feel more like home but also provides residents with familiar cues that can aid in orientation and reduce feelings of disorientation.

Our home features distinct areas with unique colour schemes and themes. This design strategy helps residents identify different spaces, such as lounges and dining areas, and provides visual landmarks that aid in navigation.

Sensory stimulation plays a crucial role in dementia care. Soft lighting, calming music, soothing scents, and tactile experiences all cater to the five senses, providing stimulation for our residents. These elements help them connect with their environment and each other, promoting relaxation and overall well-being.

Safety is paramount in dementia care. At The Firs, clear signage and contrasting colours help our residents identify key features and navigate the spaces around them independently, which is particularly important for preserving dignity.

As part of our homely environment, we have a beautiful garden that provides a tranquil space for our residents to relax and connect with nature. Research has shown that views of greenery can reduce stress and improve mood in individuals suffering with dementia.

By creating spaces that are familiar, safe, and stimulating, we aim to help residents maintain their independence, reduce anxiety, and enhance their quality of life.

At The Firs, dementia-friendly design is integral to our care philosophy, ensuring each resident feels valued, respected, and at home. We understand that designing interiors for people with dementia goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about creating spaces that nurture, comfort, and support cognitive and emotional well-being.

With over 30 years of experience, we have specialised in providing high-quality care for adults with dementia and other physical and mental health conditions. Dementia impacts each person differently, so we customise care to meet your loved one’s individual needs.

The best way to get a feel for our dementia-friendly design is to come and have a look around. Every member of our team has undergone experiential dementia training to deepen their understanding of what living with dementia might be like. But don’t take our word for it; see for yourself! Contact us to arrange a visit; we’d be happy to show you around and answer any questions you might have about our dementia care service.

Each one of our residents has become a cherished member of our extended family, and we’d love for you to become a part of that.
